Few places on Earth inspire the stuff of legend as much as the Norwegian Fjords. From classic books and fables to contemporary films, the fjords of Norway and the charming small towns that dot the landscape have provided the majestic backdrop for many a timeless scene. And for good reason – you'd be hard-pressed to find views as breathtaking as the towering cliffs, plunging waterfalls and crystal clear lakes of the region.
The rail journey voted one of the most scenic in the world winds its way through fjord country, offering visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the verdant hills and sparkling water up close. And no matter the weather, the area offers wondrous sights – lush greenery and golden sunlight in the warmer seasons, and the equally stunning blanket of the whitest of white snow during the winter months. This Railbookers journey – Norway in a Nutshell - begins in Oslo, the capital of Norway and the country’s most populous city. While in the city, head up to the Akershus Festning, a medieval castle which offers breathtaking views over the Oslofjord, the large inlet between the Torbjørnskjær and Færder lighthouses. Alternatively, visit one of Oslo's wide choice of museums, many which are in the pretty Bygdøy Peninsula. Or experience Edvard Munch's famous painting
The Scream, at the National Gallery in the city centre. The following day, the first leg of this epic rail journey through the fjords begins on the scenic train ride from Oslo to Myrdal. During the journey, as the train slowly ascends through the region, witness the change from rolling hills and farm country to snow-capped mountain peaks, pristine mountain lakes and even icy-blue glaciers. This first part of the train journey terminates in Myrdal, a tiny town with a train station, surrounded by soaring peaks and numerous waterfalls. From Myrdal, guests board the Flamsbana (Flam Railway), an iconic line constructed in 1924 that still retains the classically elegant train cars from that bygone era. Slowly wind down the spectacular Flam Valley, experiencing breathtaking scenery on the way to the small lakeside community of Flam. Along the way, take the opportunity to experience the waterfall of Kjosfossen up close. One of the most visited tourist attractions in all of Norway, the powerful waterfall is an impressive 93 metres long and only accessible by train.
Then arrive to the small village of Flam on the Aurlandsfjord, a 17-kilometre arm of the world’s second longest fjord, Sognefjord, and arguably one of the most picturesque fjords in the world. A UNESCO World-Heritage protected area, the entire fjord is surrounded by mountains reaching over 1,400 metres high, dramatically meeting the serene, glassy waters below. Spend a relaxing night in Flam sampling local food, drink and cheer, and the following morning, cruise down the Sognefjord with a scenic ferry ride from Flam to Gutvangen, a recreated Viking-era community with interesting living exhibits to explore. Along the way, view more of the steep rocky-mountains that line the fjord, as well as innumerable waterfalls, and tiny, picturesque communities. From Gutvangen, take a short bus ride to Voss – admiring more waterfalls along the way - to meet the train and continue to the charming coastal town of Bergen.
With its winding streets, colourful homes, and historic waterfront shops, Bergen retains much of its quaint old-world flavor. The UNESCO World Heritage City has been the backdrop for a number of TV and movie productions and is rumored to have been the inspiration for the fictional location of Arendelle in the movie
Frozen. Take some time to discover the colourful Hanseatic buildings of Bryggen and Vågen harbours, or take the Fløibanen funicular up to the top of Mt. Fløyen for spectacular views. Spend the night in Bergen before returning to Oslo the following day on the scenic Bergin train line, the highest mainline rail line in Northern Europe. End this incredible journey with a final night in Oslo, perhaps enjoying the waterfront area of Aker Brygge with a fine meal overlooking the harbour.
