Famous for the grand prix, Grace Kelly and its glamorous wealthy inhabitants Monte Carlo in the principality of Monaco is a picturesque resort on the French Riviera. Play your hand in the casino, look out for famous celebrities in the harbour or soak up some history in the Prince's Palace.
What to do and see in and around Monte Carlo
Prince's Palace
The Prince's Palace overlooks Monte Carlo and is built on the site of a former 13th century Genoese fortress. With its magnificent state apartments, collection of antique cars and Museum of Napoleon souvenirs, the home of the current Prince of Monaco, Prince Albert II is a fascinating place to visit.
Casino
There are few more elegant casinos in the world than that of Monte Carlo, with its marble atrium, onyx columns and red and gold auditorium. The gaming rooms provide a backdrop of stained glass and wonderful painting. The perfect place for a game of Black Jack.
Exotic Garden
Since its inception in 1933 Monaco’s Exotic Garden also known as a “magic garden” has seen several thousand varieties of succulents flourish on this cliff face nurtured by the Riviera climate. Well worth a visit if you are in any way green fingered.
Oceanographic Museum
With two levels dedicated to the Oceanographic Museum containing stuffed creatures of the deep and a basement aquarium featuring real live marine inhabitants it is no surprise that Monte Carlo’s Oceanographic Museum & Aquarium is popular with visitors to the principality. With 4,000 species of fish, visitors don’t need to get wet to explore the Riviera coastline.
Marlborough Gallery
Founded in 2000, the forth in a series of galleries opened by Frank Lloyd and Harry Fischer, the first being opened in London in 1946, the Marlborough Gallery contains a fine collection of art representing such artists as Fernando Botero, Claudio Bravo, Dale Chihuly and Chen Yifei and is open Monday to Friday.
Monaco Cathedral
Dating back to 1875 on the site of a 13th century church, this beautiful white church is the final resting place of former Princes of Monaco as well as Hollywood legend turned royalty Princess Grace.
Nice
20 minutes from Monte Carlo by train
The Capital of the Riviera, Nice, boasts an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. Originally a Roman settlement, there are some Roman remains on the hillsides north of the centre. Understandably popular with artists Nice also has a number of art galleries featuring famous names such as Henri Matisse who spent his winters in this charming resort.
Cannes
50 minutes from Monte Carlo by train
Just 50 minutes from Monte Carlo by train is another jewel of the Rivera, Cannes. Most well known for its annual film festival Cannes with its beautiful beach front and designer boutiques is a wonderful place for a day trip.
