What to do and see in and around Rome
The Colosseum
The impressive Colosseum used to entertain tens of thousand of people with the gladiator games. Today the walls of this huge amphitheatre are broken but just as striking, and often act as a backdrop to rock concerts.
The Forum
The Forum was the commercial and political centre of ancient Rome. Today little remains of the Forum but it’s still as imposing as ever and easy to imagine the Forums grandeur during the Roman Empire.
The Pantheon
The Pantheon was built in 27 B.C. by Marcus Agrippa and reconstructed in the 2nd century A.D by Hadrian. It’s an architectural masterpiece and the best preserved of Rome’s great buildings.
The Capitoline Museums
The Capitoline Museums hosts a breathtaking collection of ancient art and some of the most beautiful statues and sculptures in the world. Enjoy a coffee and stunning views from the rooftop terrace café.
The Vatican
The Vatican, the centre of the Catholic world, is located in the centre of Rome but is a completely independent state. There are so many things to see here it’s difficult to know where to start. But make sure you don’t miss St Peter's Square and Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican museums that boast one of the best art collections in the world.
The Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain is definitely Rome’s most spectacular fountain. The fountain was made even more famous by the night time bathing of Anita Ekberg in Fellini’s film “La Dolce Vita”. Throw a coin over your shoulder to ensure you will return to Rome.
Piazza del Campidoglio
The Piazza del Campidoglio, today the headquarters of the Italian government, was designed by Michelangelo in 1560. The Square is located on the top of the Capitol Hill and reached by a grand flight of steps.
Piazza Navona
Piazza Navona contains some great examples of Baroque architecture, including the Sant’ Agnese in Agone church and the Fountain of Four Rivers. The square is filled with stylish restaurants and lively bars.
The Spanish Steps (Piazza di Spagna)
The famous Spanish steps and the Piazza are popular stops for tourists. People come here to relax on the steps and watch Roman life go by. The area around the Piazza di Spagna is great for shopping. You can find shops of all the great Italian designers close by.
Campo dei Fiori
The Campo dei Fiori is a lively and picturesque market located in the old city. It offers a wide range of fresh produce including fruit, vegetables, fish, cheeses and salami. The market is open Monday to Saturday 7am-1.30pm.
Villa Borghese
The green spaces of Villa Borghese provide a necessary breathing space in this busy city. You can go here to enjoy museums and galleries, visit the zoo, or just to have a stroll and admire the beautiful fountains and pavilions.
