What to do and see in and around Bregenz

The Martinsturm
The Martinsturm or St Martin’s Tower is the gem of Bregenz’s medieval centre as well as being a major landmark of the city. This globular baroque tower and former granary is home to the Museum of Military History on the upper floor, as well as a 14th century church complete with frescoes on the ground floor.

Kunsthaus
Opened in the summer of 1997, this contemporary art museum resembles a giant glass box and was designed by the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. This wonderful building is home to a constantly revolving schedule of temporary exhibitions showing the work of modern artists such as Richard Serra and Antony Gormley.

Lake Constance
Lake Constance, also known as the third largest lake in Central Europe, borders three countries; Germany, Switzerland and Austria and has a mild, dry climate. Lake Constance is the setting for the annual Bregenz Festival when the cream of the opera world take to the floating stage. The lake also provides a wide range of watersports and boat trips.

Pfänder Mountain
Take the 6 minute Pfänder cable-car ride from Bregenz to the top of the mountain for spectacular views over Lake Constance. There is also an Alpine Wildlife Park and Eagle Observatory at the top of the mountain a ten-minute walk from the cable-car station.

Lake Promenade
The Lake Promenade dates back to 1880 when the first park was built along the shoreline, since then the park was continually added to in order to create the popular Promenade we find today. The Lake Promenade is perfect for a stroll or bike ride and is home to the city’s casino and music pavillion amongst others.

Old Town Hall
This pretty, half-timbered house dates back to the 17th century and was once Bregenz’s Town Hall, it is now home to one lucky private resident.

St. Gallus Church
The beautiful St Gallus Church dates as far back as the 12th century but was redesigned in the 18th century by Franz Anton Beer and along with the Martinsturm is another fine example of baroque architecture in Bregenz.

Post Office Building
Not just any old Post Office the Bregenz’s impressive Post Office Building, complete with vivid yellow frontage and built in the classic style, was originally built on wooden poles to prevent it from sinking into the sandy soil.
