A trip to a leading European capital is always going to be shopping heaven, particularly as Christmas approaches. Berlin is no different - and in fact goes further. The sheer range of traditional markets on offer through December makes for a magical Advent for any festive visitor.
So what makes German Christmas markets so special? The answer will vary from person to person, but the smell of cinnamon and freshly baked biscuits, the sound of sleigh bells, choirs and traditional bands, the sizzle of sausages and the warm aroma of mulled wine all combine to make them favourites among travellers worldwide.
In Berlin, more than 50 such markets take place. One of the most notable is held at the Gendarmenmarkt. Here, shoppers are able to peruse the traditional crafts and culinary treats against the sublime backdrop of Berlin's Concert House and two cathedrals.
A particularly traditional market takes place at Unterden Linden, where old-fashioned fare such as wooden toys can be found. A more active time can be had at the Alexanderplatz market with its huge ice skating rink.
For those looking to combine the festive spirit of a market with the ease and luxury of modern designer shops may choose to head to the fair near the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. This market is ideally placed for a stroll down the Kurfürstendamm shopping street.
Whichever market you choose, the charms of Berlin are sure to make for an unforgettable experience.
