Kunsthaus Zurich
13th February 2007
The Kunsthaus Zurich holds the most significant collection of art in Switzerland and features a range of work famed for its variety and historical importance.
The museum was founded in 1787 under the name Künstlergesellschaft, with the current Kunsthaus incarnation opening in 1910. The name literally means House of Art, said to reflect the Kunsthaus' aims of bringing art to the wider public.
Artists represented within the museum include Picasso, Rembrandt, Monet and Van Gogh, with a special section dedicated to Swiss art. Works by Henry Fuseli and Alberto Giacometti, whose Three Men Walking sculpture appears on some Swiss banknotes, are among the highlights.
Other 20th century artists are also on display, with the collections of pieces by Beuys and Rothko highlighting the development of painting over the course of the modern era. Forward thinking Swiss artist Richard Paul Lohse's art is another highlight.
The Kunsthaus also hosts a number of temporary exhibitions, with current displays including a presentation of around 200 Rodin sculptures, as well as a separate exhibit examining the large scale graphite drawings of Thomas Müllenbach. The breadth of the Kunsthaus' collection means the museum is sure to be fascinating for even the most casual art lover.
