The Palazzo Madama in Turin

16th January 2007

Turin's Palazzo Madama is found in the Piazza Castello and has been one of the city's most important buildings for thousands of years.

A long construction history means the Palace's design combines a number of styles. According to the Italian writer Guido Gozzano, the Palazzo "synthesises in stone the entire history of Turin".

The Palazzo was originally a Roman gate guarding the city before being transformed into a castle in the 1300s. Later that century began the construction of the four corner towers which still stand today.

The structure continued to expand throughout the Baroque period, when it became the official residence of the regents Maria Giovanna Battista of Savoy-Nemours and Maria Christina of France. The Baroque period also saw the installation of a façade and grand staircase in the Piedmontese tradition, both created by architect Filippo Juvarra.

Closed to the public for the last 19 years, the Palace re-opened in December following a number of extensive refurbishments. Visitors to the Palazzo can now once more examine areas such as the Senate Room, where major political meetings were held following the Unification of Italy in the 19th century.

The Palazzo also houses the Civic Museum of Ancient Art. Over 70,000 pieces are now on display, including silver, porcelain, paintings and sculptures. The Palazzo Madama is a spectacular tribute to Turin's history and is a must-see for anyone on a relaxing break in the city.
