Parc Phoenix in Nice
11th December 2006
Nice's Parc Phoenix is one of the most serene locations in France and holds many cultural, botanical and artistic treasures.
The park's central attraction is the tropical greenhouse, a 7,000 metres square glass structure containing rare orchids and tropical trees. Advanced cooling technology means that the glasshouse maintains seven different climates, each allowing a different variety of plantlife to flower.
Parc Phoenix hosts a number of botanical display gardens, with styles ranging from Thai to African. Nice's location on the south coast of France enables over 2,500 species of plant to flourish in the warm climate.
The Museum of Asiatic Arts is found in the middle of the park, and offers an unrivalled insight into Eastern culture. Works from China, India, Japan and Malaysia illustrate the great scope of Asian art. Pieces on display include a standing figure of Buddha from the sixth century, and an 11th century Dancing Ganesh statue from India.
The museum is housed within a building designed by Kenzo Tange, whose other works include Tokyo's distinctive Fuji Television building. The Asiatic Arts museum design combines white marble with steel girders and glass pillars to spectacular effect.
A collection of fossils and an animal sanctuary featuring sharks and birds of paradise can also be found in the park, which can truly be said to provide something for everyone on a relaxing break.
