The Berardo Museum in Portugal

15th November 2007

Lovers of modern art looking to book a short break might like to consider a trip to Lisbon, home of the magnificent Berardo Museum.

Located in Praça do Império, the precise, box-like design is in itself a visual treat equivalent to some of the masterpieces within. The museum was established in August last year to create a permanent home for the art collection of José Berardo, a Portuguese billionaire and patron of the arts, and can be found at the Centro Cultural de Belém.

The Berardo museum contains 862 works from the collection, which also has homes at the Sintra and Monte Palace museums. Berardo continues to purchase works of art from the 20th and 21st centuries, ranging from sculpture and ceramics to digital art and advertising pieces.

Around 1,000 works make up the whole modern and contemporary art collection, the oldest of which in a cubist painting by Pablo Picasso from 1909. Other artists whose works have been bought by Berardo include Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol and Henry Moore.

As well as housing a large proportion of this collection, the museum also runs temporary exhibitions. Among those taking place this winter is Eccentric Paths, an exhibition of works by young artists in central Europe.

Head to Lisbon for a feast of modern art.
