Surreal art in Berlin
5th June 2008
From 11 July 2008, the Collection Scharf-Gerstenberg in Berlin is exhibiting excellent works by surrealist artists from Piranesi, Goya and Redon to Dalí, Magritte, Max Ernst and Dubuffet.
Situated in the eastern Stüler building and in the Marstall (stables wing) opposite Charlottenburg Palace, more than 250 works - including paintings and sculptures - are exhibited on three different floors known as "Surreal Worlds".
The principles of the surrealist movement were set out in a manifesto by André Breton in 1924 and almost all of the original Surrealists are represented in the collection.
Classic surrealist films by the likes of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí will be showing, in addition to films by contemporary artists influenced by the artistic movement. Visitors can view the films in the Sahuré Hall which houses the columns of the ancient Sahuré Temple.
Larger groups of works, by artists such as René Magritte, Max Ernst, Hans Bellmer and Paul Klee, exploring surrealist conceptual themes such as combinatorics, metamorphosis and pure psychic automatism.
Paintings by Odilon Redon, Gustave Moreau and Max Klinger are included to represent late 19th century symbolism.
Indeed, the exhibition will certainly offer visitors an alternative perspective on what Dali referred to as "this mechanised and mundane universe, in which we have the honour and misfortune to live."
