Park Guell in Barcelona

26th January 2007

Barcelona's Park Güell was designed by famous architect Antoni Gaudi and remains one of the city's most popular attractions.

The park is named after Count Eusebi de Güell, who hired Gaudi to develop his vision of a unique park that could provide housing to the local community. Gaudi designed and directed the park's construction from 1900 to 1914, but the houses were never fully completed and the area opened to the public in 1922.

Found on the Cun Muntaner estate, the park provides astonishing views of the city, Barcelona Bay and the Mediterranean Sea. Barcelona's cathedral and the city's Columbus column are also visible from the park's vantage points.

Visitors entering the park will be surprised to find broken tiles and plates around much of the architecture – a trademark sign of Gaudi's deliberate attempts to create a surreal experience. Many of the sculptures found in park feature the architect's unique curved and contorted designs.

Unusual monuments include gatehouses designed to look like gingerbread, rows of uneven columns and a giant lizard water feature.

More sculptures and interesting creations are found in the Güell's Gaudi Museum, which holds furniture designed by Gaudi as well as some early sketches. Gaudi lived in the museum house from 1906 until his death 20 years later, and visitors to the area are sure to share in his love for the highly unusual Park Güell project.
