Barcelona comes alive for Catalonian festival

The Fiesta of La Mercè is one of the most fantastic festivals in Spain and attracts thousands of visitors each year to enjoy the celebration of Catalan culture and traditions.
Towards the end of September Barcelona comes alive with fire-breathing dragons, live music, fabulous costumes and dance groups in honour of the Virgin of Mercy, the city's patron saint and protector.
Numerous and diverse events take place throughout the day and night during the festival, with so much on offer that people of all ages and tastes are guaranteed to find something to keep them highly entertained.
One of the highlights is the Carrefoc, a midnight parade of dragons, eagles and devils which takes place simultaneously with a grand fireworks display.
Another event not to be missed is the human tower building competition, in which teams of costumed participants attempt to build the tallest tower and it is guaranteed to be an impressive spectacle.
In addition, street theatre, circus acts, dance groups, performing artists and live bands will be on show throughout the streets and squares of the city.
The Fiesta of La Mercè is sure to have a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere and is a wonderful event for those seeking an exciting and original weekend break.
