Old and new come together in Antwerp

Antwerp is an extremely diverse city containing a number of neighbourhoods, each with their own distinct personality, and is often thought of as one of the most underrated destinations in Europe.
The second largest city in Belgium, the old and the new intertwine perfectly in Antwerp, with glorious medieval architecture sitting hand-in-hand with modern bars and trendy boutiques.
The old city is full of medieval charm and the Cathedral of our Lady is one of the finest gothic buildings in Europe. Grote Markt (Grand Market Square) is also a visitor favourite, where lies the Brabo fountain and the famous tavern Den Engel.
Antwerp has numerous museums and galleries, most notably the Royal Museum of Fine Art, which is located in a fabulous neo-classical building and houses an incredible collection of paintings from the 14th century to the present day.
The city is famous for its fashion and there are plenty of shopping streets with a wide range of trendy offerings, while a trip to Belgium is never complete without sampling a Belgian beer or waffle at one of the many cafes.
Antwerp has two main train stations, with Central Station also a magnificent building. Brussels is only 35 minutes away and links to many other destinations are easily available, making Antwerp a great choice for a railway holiday.
